DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position located at the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office (OCSO), is responsible for developing, overseeing, and providing OCSO Support Services program activities. The Director will work closely with the staff in the Custody, Correction, Police, Civil, and Civilian Departments to implement officer support services and programming. This employee reports directly to and works under the general supervision of the Sheriff. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Oversee all facets of the OCSO Support Services Program, including but not limited to the Early Intervention System, Peer to Peer Support Program, Chaplain Program, CISM response, and the Wellness App (Cordico). Liaison to EAP and support to the Vets Re-integration Program and Therapy Dog Program;
  • Serve as Chaplain for OCSO Personnel;
  • Serves as an advisor or expert for specific critical incidents, committees, conferences and projects.
  • Works collaboratively with OCSO command staff to address and identify systemic needs;
  • Develops policy and general orders in collaboration with OCSO command staff;
  • Develops, provides, and participates in training on mental health and officer wellness topics;
  • Works with OCSO Training Coordinator and command staff to identify topics of need for the office ranging from recruit level, roll call, in-service, enhanced in-service, and supervisory training (training topics to include, but not be limited to de-escalation, veteran specific resources, suicide by cop, decreasing suicide risk, mental hygiene law, increasing resilience);
  • Establishes key partnerships with governmental, institutional, and community stakeholders to support the health and wellness of members of OCSO & any Onondaga County based Law Enforcement Agencies;
  • Provides immediate support to officers directly after traumatic events to reduce the risk of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD);
  • Provides referrals for services/support to OCSO staff as recommended/agreed upon;
  • Leads critical incident debriefings, with peer support, and follows up twenty-four (24) hours after incident;
  • Gauges follow-up/involvement based on needs and/or desires of deputy.
  • FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Thorough knowledge of available appropriate community resources.
  • Good knowledge of effective clinical treatment in direct care, referral and consultation.
  • Good knowledge of police officer culture and other sworn staffs' specific support needs; ability to work independently and collaboratively with people from different backgrounds.
  • Ability to create and deliver effective and engaging presentations, education and training.
  • Ability to problem solve and think creatively.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships specifically with sworn staff.
  • Ability to organize, facilitate, and manage multiple tasks and projects.
  • Ability to complete work in a timely manner.
  • Ability to initiate meetings with key stakeholders and conduct follow-up activities; supervisory ability; ability to communicate orally and in writing; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • (A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Master's degree in Social Work or a mental health counseling, Master's degree with Clinical Pastoral Education, clinical mental health counseling, or psychology field plus five (5) years paid experience providing direct client mental health counseling services involving individual or group therapy or in the wellness field; OR,
  • (B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's degree in one of the fields mentioned in (A) above plus six (6) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience providing direct client mental health counseling services involving individual or group therapy or in the wellness field; OR,
  • (C) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
  • SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: If you are appointed, you will be required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or otherwise demonstrate your capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.
