Our client is seeking an experienced Head of Design Management to lead the Design Management team in the Essex office. Reporting to the Area Director, you will oversee daily management of the Design Management functions, including line management of Design Managers, resourcing, recruitment, project input during pre-construction and construction phases, design programme development, reporting, and compliance with MS processes and standards. This role is office-based with regular site visits.You will administer the client's Design Management processes, managing and coordinating the entire design process through RIBA stages, contributing to bid/win strategies, PCSA/Second Stage, SHEQ, operations, and commercial reviews. Knowledge of sustainability and digital capabilities is essential, integrated into their business-as-usual approach.Ensure departmental procedures are followed, participate in design strategy development, and ensure adherence to the scope of services and design brief, developing comprehensive scope documentation for key project stages.The successful candidate will oversee design managers and coordinate activities across the design team, supply chain, and statutory bodies (e.g., Local Authority planners, Building Control, HSE), ensuring compliance with legislation, standards, and project timelines.What are they looking for?You might be a Principal or Senior Design Manager with experience in line management, seeking the next career step. This role involves managing a larger team and contributing to the evolution of design management practices within the company via the national Design Manager HoDM group.You should have extensive experience with large or medium-scale projects across RIBA stages, strong two-stage (PCSA) design and build procurement experience, and on-site design management. Tier one main contractor experience with relevant qualifications or professional memberships is preferred.Ideally, you will have:Significant experience in the main contracting market, with projects in Education, Healthcare, or Higher Education sectors between GBP10-GBP50 million.An existing network of consultant contacts and relationships.Leadership skills for managing professional teams and strong sustainability knowledge, including BREEAM and project experience across bid and delivery stages.Experience with Pre-construction (PSCA), BIM, embodied carbon calculation, and energy-in-use is advantageous.Proven ability to present to stakeholders and clients in work-winning and reporting contexts.To succeed, you should share their passion for projects and enjoy working within a collaborative, inclusive, and hardworking team environment.
