General Function The Detroit Swims Program Coordinator will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality programs and highly motivated staff, as well as administrative support for the aquatic department in various roles, but foremost in the capacity assigned by the Program Director. Education/Experience/Training/Certifications
  • High school diploma or its equivalency required, some college preferred.
  • Experience in curriculum and program planning, implementation, and evaluation is required.
  • A minimum of two years' working experience in YMCA aquatics is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in administration, including personnel management, budget development and control, supervision, and the ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting aggressive goals is required.
  • Current certifications in YSI, CPR, and first aid are required; YMCA Swim lessons certification, Aquatic Instructor Training, and American Red Cross are preferred. Must obtain American Red Cross within one month of employment and YMCA Swim lesson certification within three months of employment.
  • Practical full-time or part-time experience in aquatic supervision is required.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Function as head lifeguard and lead teacher, guarding and teaching a maximum of 29 hours per week
  • Approximately eight to ten hours per week will be applied to administrative duties such as supporting swim instructor scheduling, returning phone calls, and responding to program-related inquiries.
  • Supporting the Program Director with the creation and delivery of department schedules, contracts, brochures, and performance evaluations.
  • Must maintain current aquatic certifications and support the supervision of aquatics personnel.
  • Inspect on a regular basis the pool, pool area, equipment, and supplies regularly and report any concerns immediately.
  • Maintains effective and positive relationships with the staff, members, and participants.
  • Attend all staff meetings, association/branch trainings, and participate in association/branch events as required.
  • Had knowledge of and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergencies immediately, following the YMCA's policies and procedures. Completed related reports as required and updated policies when necessary.

  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills are required.
  • Candidates must possess superior leadership skills with the capacity to rally a team around a goal.
