Job Description :

Reports to Manager/Director EOC and Support Services. The Environment of Care (EOC) and Life Safety (LS) Specialist is responsible for supporting a safe, functional, and compliant healthcare environment by overseeing programs related to the Environment of Care and Life Safety standards. This role ensures compliance with all applicable regulations and accreditation requirements, such as those from The Joint Commission (TJC), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and OSHA. Job Responsibilities:
  • Monitor and coordinate compliance with all Environment of Care (EOC) and Life Safety (LS) standards.
  • Conduct regular safety rounds and hazard surveillance inspections across the healthcare system.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of safety policies, procedures, and training.
  • Participate in and support regulatory surveys (e.g., TJC, CMS, local authorities).
  • Analyze incident reports and data to identify risks or trends.
  • Work closely with departments such as Facilities Engineering, Security, Infection Control, Emergency Preparedness, and Clinical Operations.
  • Assist in maintaining documentation and records required for EOC & LS compliance.
  • Support facility compliance with Life Safety Code (NFPA 101) and related codes.
  • Coordinate with contractors and vendors regarding safety and compliance on projects and maintenance activities.
Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the organization by:
  • Providing training to Facility Engineering staff as well as other hospital employees in area of expertise.
  • Attending in-services and department meetings; also participating in continuing education and attending conferences as approved.
  • Maintaining professional affiliations as appropriate.
  • Reading current professional literature and journals.
  • Completing other job-related duties and projects as assigned.
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIESAssociate complies with the following organizational requirements:
  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in safety, Healthcare Administration, Environmental Science, or related field preferred. Equivalent experience may be considered. Experience: 2-5 years in healthcare safety, facilities management, or compliance; prior EOC & LS program involvement preferred. Certifications: CHSP (Certified Healthcare Safety Professional), CHEP (Certified Healthcare Emergency Professional), or similar credentials preferred. Knowledge of: Joint Commission EOC standards, OSHA regulations, NFPA codes, CMS conditions of participation.

Working Conditions
  • May be exposed to fumes, extreme temperatures, dust, noise, and hazards such as electrical shock or gases.
  • Considerable walking and standing for long periods of time.
  • Travel between facilities is required.
Physical Demands
  • Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e., to lift, work on ladders, walk, stand for prolonged periods of time, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position.
