Work Shifts Other Work Schedule Job Description PURPOSE OF POSITION: The Operating Room Technician performs nursing procedures congruent with professional training in the operating room. He/she gives assistance to the surgical team in the pre, intra and post- operative phases of surgery in all surgical cases performed in the Operating Room. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: • Assures that the patient's rights are met as identified by the institution. • Prepare room and equipment based on patient's surgical needs. • Ensures that all equipment/instruments are available and in working condition. Reports equipment malfunction. • Collects assembles and organize instrumentation and supplies for surgery to be done. • Assists in preparation and sterilization of instruments as the need arises. • Opens sterile packages/instruments for case before patient enters the operating room suite. • Scrubs and set-up sterile field prior to procedure. • Maintains aseptic technique and adheres to OSHA Regulations. • Reports beak in sterile technique. • Enforces Infection Control practices in the Women's Option Unit. • Performs scrub nurse skills with competence. • Performs instruments, sponge and sharps count as per Policy and Procedure. • Assists with the transportation of patient to operating room from holding areas when necessary. • Assists in positioning of patients as needed. • Administers drugs and solutions as prescribed. • Recognizes emergency situations and responds effectively as it arises. • Adheres to policy and procedure regarding care of specimens. • Participates in cost containment and waste control. • Maintains sterile set-up until the patient is out of the operating room suite. • Replenishes supplies in rooms. • Collects and assembles supplies for the following case in the room. • Assists in maintaining par level of supplies. • Checks outdate of sterile supplies. • Identifies personal learning needs and seeks opportunities for self development. • Maintains professional competence through participation in continuing education and other appropriate learning experiences. • Completes own continuing education records. • Attends unit meetings, read minutes when not able to attend, read posted agenda and participates in discussion of problem identification and resolution. • Acts as preceptor for new staff members and other staff who needs orientation in their particular specialty. • Participates/contributes in the improvement of patient care in the Women's Options Unit. • Ensures a safe and secure environment, free of hazards to reduce the risk of injury to all customers (patients, visitors and staff.) • Conducts risk assessments to reduce adverse events. • Effectively utilizes the electronic as well as the paper medical record. • Checks surgical invasive verification for completeness before patient is sent into the OR suite. • Calls for a time out before incision time. • Labels all medication and solutions appropriately including syringes and containers on the sterile field. • Confirms expiration date of packages/supplies/medications with the circulating nurse before accepting into the sterile field. • Reports any discrepancies in temperature and humidity in the OR suites. • Hand off any pertinent patient information to relievers and other staff • Applies National Patient Safety Goals in perioperative practices. • Checks for completeness and expiration date of supplies of the Latex and other specialty carts as assigned. • Demonstrates proficiency in population specific plan of care. • Maintain safe work habits and assumes responsibility in patient safety. • Observe telephone etiquette and communicate in a friendly and professional manner • Ability to work and maintain confidentiality of patient and personnel data. • Works effectively with other staff members and show respect to other employees • Always wear name badge. • Performs other professional nursing activities as assigned by Head nurse and/or supervisor. Minimum Qualifications 1. Holds and maintains a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA); or 2. Successful completion of a nationally accredited educational program for surgical technologists or successful completion of an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard or Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, and holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential administered by a nationally accredited surgical technologist credentialing organization other than the NBSTSA, such as the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT). Special Note: Any employee who functions as a Surgical Technologist will be required to annually complete fifteen (15) hours of continuing education in order to remain qualified to perform the functions of a Surgical Technologist at an NYC Health + Hospitals facility.
