SmartHire is looking hiring a Buyer for a leading manufacturer in Puyallup. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 4 years of purchasing experience with at least 2 years in raw metals commodity and along with a degree. Advanced level ERP/MRP along with MS office is required. Must be able to work onsite.

Salary:

$78k-$83k DOE

Benefits:

Schedule:

Monday – Thurs 7am – 5pm & Fridays 7am – 11am (some flexibility)

About the Role

We're looking for a Strategic Buyer with a specialty in metals and direct materials procurement to join our dynamic team and help elevate our sourcing game.This isn't your average purchasing gig—we want a forward thinker who can balance analytics, negotiation savvy, and crossfunctional collaboration to make a real impact on cost, efficiency, and supply chain resilience.

What You'll Be Doing

Market Intelligence & Strategic Sourcing

  • Analyze global market trends and commodity indicators to inform purchasing strategy and forecast cost impacts.
  • Lead strategic sourcing initiatives rooted in data, supplier dynamics, and risk mitigation.

Supplier Relationships & Negotiation

  • Own supplier negotiations—pricing, terms, and performance—with a focus on savings, service, and long-term value.
  • Collaborate with vendors to build strong, sustainable partnerships that drive mutual success.

Procurement Excellence

  • Optimize procurement processes and contracts, aligning them with Lean principles and business objectives.
  • Identify and implement improvements that streamline purchasing operations.

Inventory Management

  • Maintain optimal inventory levels while supporting production goals and working capital targets.
  • Use MRP data to issue purchase orders, manage schedules, and ensure material readiness.

Performance & Quality

  • Track KPIs like inventory turns, on-time delivery, and cost reduction progress.
  • Support quality control by coordinating returns and supplier credits for non-conforming materials.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Act as the go-between for suppliers and internal teams, ensuring seamless communication and problem-solving.
  • Manage surplus and obsolete inventory with an eye on cost and efficiency.

Lean Supply Programs

  • Drive continuous improvement by implementing and sustaining initiatives like VMI, Kanban, and consignment.

Experience

  • 4+ years in purchasing, with direct responsibility for raw material sourcing.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience buying metal commodities—this one's non-negotiable.
  • Strong command of MRP/ERP systems (3+ years in a manufacturing setting).

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain, Operations, or related field.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Working knowledge of Lean manufacturing and inventory management principles.
  • Strong grasp of commodity markets, especially metals and the trends that impact them.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel (you will be using it).
  • Excellent negotiation, analytical, and communication skills—written and verbal.
