Director - Alternative Education

- Master's degree required in Alternative Education or educational administration/leadership.
- New Jersey School Administrator Certificate (preferred).
- New Jersey Principal Certificate.
- Minimum of three (3) years of successful experience in school or District-level administration as Principal.
- Minimum of four (4) years successful experience in teaching Alternative Education.
- Knowledge of New Jersey Student Learning Standards for curriculum, assessment and instruction.
- Demonstrated knowledge of subject specialty and effective teaching methods.
- Ability to create a District-level professional development program.
- Ability to maintain a positive learning environment.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status *As defined in N.J.A.C. 6A:9-9 Instructional certificates
ResponsibilitiesI. Management and Coaching of Instructional Staff
- Observes, coaches, and evaluates Teachers, Department Chairs, and District Supervisors, as well as provides ongoing professional development for targeted improvement in identified growth areas.
- Provides constructive feedback to Principals, Vice Principals, District Supervisors, and Department Chairs on the improvement of student achievement and effective implementation of the Alternative Education curricular programs.
- Monitors all Teach NJ Educator Effectiveness activities (IPDP/CAP), observations, and evaluations) of Department Chairs of Alternative Education, District Level Supervisors, and Teachers of Alternative Education.
- Validates evaluation ratings of Department Chairs of Alternative Education, District Level Supervisors, and Teachers of Alternative Education.
- Assumes the orientation and mentor responsibilities of all novice Department Chairs of Alternative Education and District-level Supervisors, as well as monitors the orientation and mentorship of Teachers and Teacher Coaches.
- Leverages Department Chairs of Alternative Education, Teacher Coaches, and Academic Interventionists to reach maximum implementation of District approved curricular guides and intervention strategies by providing monthly and quarterly ongoing professional development opportunities.
- Synthesizes all Alternative Education achievement quarterly reports and provide a comprehensive review and presentation at various forums throughout the school year.
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills; the ability to select, develop, and implement innovative practices to drive improved educational outcomes.
- Ability to create efficient processes that build educational additional paths.
- Ability to coordinate and collaborate with diverse groups of professionals across multiple departments and organizations to achieve unified and consistent practices.
- Ability to effectively achieve multiple goals and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
II. Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment
- Serves as the District's leader and expert in the area of Alternative Education.
- Authors, updates, and furnishes rigorous K-12 Alternative Education curriculum guides, bridge manuals if applicable, and technological resources to the District.
- Develops a comprehensive strategy to guarantee an accurate inventory and timely distribution of all curricular resources.
- Develops all K-12 Alternative Education diagnostics, interim assessments, District assessments, mid-term and final exams.
- Collaborates with the Director of Bilingual and ESL services, and the Executive Director of Special Education to ensure curriculum guides, units of student, resources, and assessments are tailored for all learners.
- Collaborates with all District Directors to ensure curriculum guides, units of study, resources, and assessments are aligned to State standards and result in interdisciplinary opportunities.
III. Organizational Leadership
- Establishes and executes organizational systems and strategies to monitor District Supervisors, Department Chairs, Teacher Coaches, and District goals.
- Develops and monitors strategies for high-level collaboration among faculty and staff.
- Communicates effectively and maintains a positive disposition in all circumstances to ensure an outcome that promotes student academic achievement, staff professional development, and District-wide success.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning.
IV. Alternative Education Improvement Plan
- Engages collaboratively in the school-wide and District-wide Alternative Education effort to build a shared vision and supportive culture, identify common goals, and monitor and evaluate progress toward those goals.
- Participates actively as a Alternative Education team member to improve teaching and learning in the school and District.
- Participates actively as part of school team, giving feedback on Alternative Education practice, examining student work, analyzing data from multiple sources, making decisions to improve student learning, and being accountable for each students learning in the area of Alternative Education.
- Reports results of improvement plan effectiveness to school Principals as well as the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning and Deputy Superintendent on a regular basis.
- Helps design and participates in school and/or District professional development activities to improve Alternative Education teachings and learning.
- Helps design and participates in parent and family workshops to enhance Alternative Education learning at home and school.
- Engages in professional learning to enhance his/her knowledge and skill in Alternative Education, contributes to the knowledge and skills of Supervisors, Department Chairpersons, Teacher Coaches, as well as Teachers, and work collaboratively to advance professional practice in Alternative.
Reports To: Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and LearningSalary, Terms & Affiliation
- Salary: $156,000-$171,000.
- Employment period: 12 Month Calendar.
- Union affiliation: City Association of Supervisors and Administrators (C.A.S.A.).
