Position Summary:
Salem University seeks a visionary academic leader to serve as Provost and Chief Academic Officer, reporting directly to the President. This role provides dynamic leadership for all academic programs and is second in command of the institution. The successful candidate will be a forward-thinking strategist with a demonstrated track record in growing academic programs, advancing innovation, and integrating emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) into teaching, learning, and operations.A primary area of emphasis is the expansion and excellence of nursing and health sciences, with the expectation that the Provost will champion interdisciplinary collaboration and market-responsive program development.
Essential Responsibilities:
Ensure Salem University academic operations are fully compliant with federal, state and local agencies as well as our regional accreditor, the Higher Learning Commission, and other programmatic accrediting bodies.
Ensures the university operates with integrity and student focus.
Oversees institutional effectiveness and governance including oversight of all academic committees and senior leadership role on all university matters.
Lead the development and implementation of strategic growth initiatives across the university's academic portfolio, including healthcare and non-healthcare disciplines, with a focus on expanding high-impact programs that align with workforce demands and promote student achievement.
Lead academic innovation across disciplines, particularly through AI-enhanced learning, digital transformation, and next-generation curriculum design.
Spearhead strategic growth initiatives in healthcare education, including the expansion of nursing, allied health, and interdisciplinary health science programs.
Advise the President on academic priorities and provide leadership in building a high-performing, inclusive academic culture.
Provide oversight and vision for institutional planning, accreditation, academic quality, and operational effectiveness.
Ensure evidence-based decision-making and continuous improvement through data analysis and outcome assessments.
Represent the university in local, regional, and national forums; build strategic partnerships to elevate Salem's academic profile.
Financial Stewardship: Advise President on opportunities to improve cost of instruction and ensure operating expenses are aligned with net revenue.
Oversee faculty effectiveness and quality of instruction through recruitment, professional development and retention of faculty.
Support enrollment growth through innovative pipelines, market-aligned programming, and academic excellence.
Engage internal and external stakeholders in shaping and promoting Salem's academic brand.
Leads cyclical program and policy review for the university in accordance with regulatory guidelines and university policy.
Qualifications:
An earned terminal degree (preferably in a health sciences field).
A distinguished record of leadership in higher education marked by successful program development, academic innovation, and strategic growth, while supporting excellence across diverse academic fields.
Proven success in launching or scaling innovative academic programs, especially involving AI, digital tools, or interdisciplinary collaboration.
Deep knowledge of accreditation processes, academic compliance, and data-informed decision-making.
Excellent skills in team leadership, communication, and external engagement.
Demonstrated commitment to ethical governance, access and opportunity for learning, and student-centered values.
Preferred Characteristics:
Track record of leveraging emerging technologies, such as AI, to enhance learning outcomes and operations.
Experience in start-up, turnaround, or growth-stage academic environments.
Experience with online/hybrid learning modalities.
Ability to identify trends and anticipate workforce needs to develop responsive academic programs.
Ability to operate in a hybrid/remote environment and willing to travel as needed to meet university needs.
Experience managing academic budgets and resource planning in dynamic environments.
