The Category Manager, Natural Living is responsible for the planning, developing, and implementing brand strategies, pricing and promotional strategies, and merchandising/marketing programs within the Natural Living Department. They will have discretion in decisions involving the procurement and replenishment of all goods and services related to Natural Living. Additionally, the position will work with store operations management and department managers to execute specific merchandising and procurement programs and train and develop department personnel to support Bristol Farms' corporate financial and brand objectives.

The individual will have exceptional organizational skills and know how to prioritize work. There are many tasks to accomplish, most of which have strict, unmovable deadlines; thus, the individual will be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines successfully while not sacrificing the quality of the tasks performed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Includes the following (other duties may be assigned):

  • Develop Bristol Farms as a destination for nutrition and wellness.
  • Develop preliminary product schematics for the Natural Living departments.
  • Identify vendors, manufacturers, and distributors to partner with.
  • Lead and manage the development, implementation, and evaluation of brand strategy and brand plan to ensure brand objectives are met and support the overall company objectives.
  • Responsible for ongoing sales and promotional planning.
  • Partner with the corporate marketing team to support sales strategies and production timelines.
  • Partner with and support store leadership to develop individual store programs for Natural Living & Wellness.
  • Provide strategic direction to the Natural Living Teams in developing and implementing brand programs to achieve business objectives.
  • Manage the development of success measures and the performance monitoring process, and make recommendations to correct performance shortfalls where necessary.
  • Build the brand equity through consistent messaging and brand imagery in all communication channels.
  • Develop and conduct onsite nutrition-related wellness seminars and training courses for interested employees and customers.
  • Verifies communication regarding merchandising, advertising, marketing, and general issues with store operations.
  • Monitors the profitability and performance of existing products and services.
  • Requisitions of merchandise from the supplier are based on available space, merchandise on hand, customer demand, or advertised specials.
  • Will oversee the execution of department displays, develop schematics, merchandise on shelves, counters, displays, or cases to attract customers and promote sales.
  • Oversight involving all costs and retail to maximize gross margin while complying with the corporate pricing strategy.
  • Maintains cost and retail item files.
  • Supports the company's corporate growth and its culture development.
  • Works with and assists department leadership to develop departmental strategies.
  • Reviews and corrects Inventory reports for counting errors and irregularities, and accurate valuations.
  • Ensures that the ordering system and order guides are maintained and monitored.
  • Under the direction of department leadership, creates and reviews reports that enable in-depth analysis of all departmental aspects.
  • At times, visits competitors' stores for benchmarking purposes and gathers potential new Merchandising ideas.
  • Addresses and resolves distribution problems, including direct deliveries and BFDC.
  • Monitors inventory levels at BFDC.
  • Responds to daily calls and e-mails from customers, Store Directors, Department Managers, Vendors, and Brokers regarding all aspects of the department.
  • At the discretion of department leadership, will meet with Vendors and Brokers to review and discuss new items, marketing plans, and promotional programs.
  • Develops marketing programs to build customer traffic and generate sales.
  • May attend trade shows to identify trends and procure products.
  • Interprets financial reports and identifies opportunities accordingly.
  • Verifies invoicing and supplier companies to purchase orders for accuracy.

Qualifications

The individual must identify current and future product trends and customer requirements. They must have exceptional organizational skills, be able to multitask on various projects at any one time, be a savvy thinker, be a team player, cost analyze the gross margin of all items and categories available for sale within the department, and design and build displays. The individual must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Knowledge of the Natural Living department and product sourcing is essential. Inventory, shrink, gross profit, labor, and supply expense management skills are all keys to success in this position. Verbal and written communication skills are also critical leadership skills required for success in this position.

  • Health food, nutrition background, or passion for nutrition.
  • Awareness of current trends in the natural, organic, and nutrition fields.
  • Strong ability to multitask.
  • Must have a creative eye and the ability to convey Bristol Farms Lazy Acres marketing strategy.
  • Must be able to meet all deadlines with reasonable expectations.
  • Have excellent people skills; can train and develop store teams.
  • Have a good business sense.

Education and/or Experience

As this is a Salaried Position, the minimum education requirement includes enrollment in or completion of one of the following:

  • Retail Management Certificate Program.
  • Associate degree (AA) or equivalent from a two-year College or technical school.
  • Bachelor's degree (BA) from a four-year College, University, or technical school.

Additionally, the individual should have a minimum of 5 years' experience in Natural Living/Wellness and be able to perform the outlined duties of the position, as well as have multitasking and multi-project capabilities.
