About Preemptive Health and Medicine

Flagship's Preemptive Health & Medicine Initiative is pioneering a new field to protect, maintain, or improve people's health before they get sick. Starting with the premise that health should be accessible for all, this initiative is pursuing interventions that protect health from external threats and those that can prevent or delay the onset of diseases. This work has the potential to revolutionize the way we prepare for the next infectious disease threat and the way we prevent and preempt disease such as Type 2 Diabetes, cancer, and neurodegenerative disorders, adding years to life and life to years.

Position Summary:

Reporting to Senior Partner for Preemptive Health and Medicine, the Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) for Preemptive Health and Medicine at Flagship Pioneering, you will play a pivotal role in driving our mission to protect, maintain and improve people's health before they get sick. This high-impact role involves spearheading research initiatives, setting scientific strategies, and leading a dynamic team of scientific colleagues to develop groundbreaking preemptive health technologies and therapies. The ideal candidate will possess a unique blend of scientific vision, leadership acumen, and entrepreneurial spirit.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership:

• Develop and implement a transformative scientific strategy focused on preemptive health and medicine, that incorporates thinking across the origination teams and Flagship Companies.
• Identify emerging scientific trends in preemptive health and medicine and opportunities to create new capabilities and innovations.
• Collaborate with other senior leaders to align the strategic scientific direction of preemptive health with the company's overall mission and business goals.

Research & Development:

• Coordinate and provide oversight to R&D activities within the preemptive health and medicine domain.
• Partner with individuals in the regulatory and government space to ensure pathway for clinical trials, approvals and commercial environment develops for preemptive health.
• Design, manage, and evaluate advanced research projects, ensuring they meet high standards of scientific rigor.

Team Leadership:

• Lead, mentor, and inspire a multidisciplinary team of scientists, researchers, and innovators.
• Cultivate a collaborative and inclusive work environment that encourages creativity and professional growth.

Partnerships & Collaboration:

• Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders including academic institutions, healthcare organizations, and industry partners.
• Represent the company at scientific conferences, industry events, and within professional networks.
• Collaborate with internal and external partners to accelerate the development and implementation of novel preemptive health solutions.

Innovation & Entrepreneurship:

• Contribute to the ideation and incubation of new ventures within Flagship Pioneering's ecosystem.
• Play an active role in the creation and development of new scientific concepts and business opportunities.

Qualifications:

• PhD/MD with at least 15+ years of experience in life sciences sector.
• Proven scientific entrepreneur with strong business acumen that brings a track record of ideating high-quality products or companies from various sources (internal innovation, academics, partnerships, etc.).
• Expertise in therapeutics and/or diagnostics with deep proficiency in one of the following indications of cardiometabolic, infectious diseases, oncology and/or neurology.
• Highly proficient in driving strategy for early discovery endeavors to product commercialization.
• Experienced across multiple regulatory & reimbursement landscapes highly preferred.
• Track Record of initiating and maintaining high-caliber partnerships/collaborations/alliances with reputable institutions and brings a large network in biotech/pharma/device.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Expertise in digital health, wearables/sensors, patient engagement/monitoring, and/or behavior interventions.
• Expertise in therapeutics amongst all of the aforementioned indications.
• Well-versed in crafting deal structures, driving value inflection points, and building top-performing teams.
• Technically adept to lead technology due diligence, search/evaluation, market competitive landscape analyses, and build out of robust/versatile pipelines across multiple product categories.
