The Registered Professional Nurse assesses patient needs, develops a plan of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, provides direct care, evaluates patient progress, and coordinates care delivery throughout the patient's episode. The RN develops specialized skills in caring for patients admitted for medical conditions. Care is provided to adult, adolescent, and geriatric populations with medical conditions. The Registered Nurse is accountable for patient and family education to assist in understanding self-care beyond hospitalization, including necessary lifestyle changes to support health and healing. The Registered Nurse is expected to promote comfort and provide emotional support in a healing environment. Key job functions include: - Applying nursing knowledge and skills in the delivery of care. - Assessing patient and family needs through active listening and analyzing data or information obtained through direct observation or assessment. - Creating a developmentally and age-appropriate, culturally relevant, individualized plan of care to address the identified health problems. - Collaborating with the patient, family, physician, and healthcare team members to set goals and monitor patient progress. - Adjusting the plan based on patient response or changes in conditions. - Advocating for and protecting the health, safety, and rights of the patient. - Encouraging mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to achieve optimal patient outcomes. - Teaching others and delegating tasks consistent with individuals' education, training, and scope of practice. - Safeguarding public safety through compliance with infection prevention strategies. - Motivating patients and families by teaching them what is needed to continue care and healing at home. - Assessing patient and family learning styles and maximizing understanding during educational sessions. - Documenting the education provided and the patient/family response. - Systematically evaluating the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice. - Engaging in self-evaluation of practice for professional development. - Using logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions. - Making meaningful connections with patients and families by being present, listening, communicating, and anticipating needs. - Embracing the creation of a healing environment as a key element of professional nursing practice. - Demonstrating skill in medication administration and other interventions. - Being aware of the occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens due to the nature of required tasks.
