This work is achieved by promoting health lifestyles, researching disease and injury prevention, detecting, preventing, and responding to infectious disease”.Come be a part of Mecklenburg County's Public Health department's vision to “assure the health and safety of our diverse and changing community today and for future generations.”Position SummaryPerforms practical nursing services allowed by the NC Board of Nursing and standards in assigned program under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse; may assist with clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks.All Licensed Practical Nurses employed by the Mecklenburg County Health Department, regardless of official title or classification, may provide nursing services during urgent and/or emergent public health events. These services include, but are not limited to, administration of immunizations for various ages and groups, mass medication distribution, and provision of health services in shelter environments.Essential Functions
  • Document patient history using structured, written guidelines, policies, and forms.
  • Assist patients with the completion of self-histories or self-assessment questionnaires.
  • Administer medication/immunizations when an initial assessment (care planning) has been completed by the RN or standards of care and policy dictate that an initial assessment is not required.
  • Make referrals and follow up with patients to ensure they make and keep referral appointments based on policies, procedures, and standing orders (e.g., follow-up after an abnormal pap smear).
  • Contact or follow up with providers for information on patients and their care.
  • Document information on the appropriate paper or electronic client record, nursing care plan, or other documents.
  • Track immunizations and follows up, and enter data into North Carolina Immunization Registry (NCIR).
  • Obtain heights, weights, vital signs, hearing and vision screening, and lab specimens when the procedure falls within LPN legal scope of practice as ordered by providers or Standing Orders.
  • Assist medical personnel during clinical exams and procedures.
  • Ensure that clinics are stocked and supplied with materials; set up equipment and supplies.
  • Provide educational materials and counseling on communicable disease, diet and nutrition, medication, and general health care based on teaching plan/protocol assigned by the RN.
  • Mecklenburg County Health Department Employees: Respond in cases of urgent and/or emergent events that require public health interventions. Employees may be trained for and assigned duties unrelated to their regular work; work outside normal business hours and workdays and/or in a different work location may be required. Emergency events include, but are not limited to, communicable disease outbreaks, severe weather situations (e.g. snow or ice storms, tornados, hurricanes), natural disasters (e.g. earthquakes), fire, or power outages, and acts of terrorism.
Minimum Qualifications Experience: Minimum of two years of work experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse.EducationHigh School Diploma or equivalent and completion of an accredited LPN program.Combination of relevant education and relevant experience accepted?: NoLicenses and Certifications
  • Current license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in NC issued by the NC Board of Nursing or another Nurse Licensure Compact State.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (CPR & AED) by the American Heart Association that is valid for at least 90 days after hire. Maintenance of this certification is required and as funds are available may be supported as part of employment.
  • Requires a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver's License
  • Requires County Driving Privileges
  • Annual Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check required.
