Role Description
The Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining safety and health programs to ensure a safe working environment in a meat processing plant for compliance with OSHA, USDA, and company standards. This role plays a critical part in protecting employees, ensuring regulatory compliance, and promoting a culture of safety in a high-risk meat processing and slaughter facility.
Key Responsibilities
• Develop and enforce safety policies, procedures, and programs tailored to meat processing and slaughter operations.
• Conduct regular safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments throughout the facility.
• Lead investigations of workplace accidents, injuries, and near-misses; recommend and implement corrective actions.
• Ensure compliance with OSHA, USDA FSIS, EPA, and other applicable regulations.
• Maintain and update safety records, training logs, and incident reports.
• Coordinate and deliver safety training for all employees, including PPE use, lockout/tagout, machine guarding, and bloodborne pathogens.
• Serve as the primary contact for regulatory inspections and audits.
• Collaborate with supervisors on workers' compensation claims and return-to-work programs.
• Monitor and manage safety metrics and KPIs to drive continuous improvement.
• Implement and lead the facility's safety committee and participate in cross-functional safety initiatives.
• Ensure all equipment has safety Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in place and that they are regularly reviewed and updated.
Qualifications
· 5+ years of safety management experience in a manufacturing, meat industry environment.
· In-depth knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1910 (General Industry Standards), USDA FSIS regulations, HACCP, SSOPs, PPE standards, and Lockout/Tagout procedures.
· Preferred certifications: Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST), HAZWOPER, or First Aid/CPR Instructor.
· Experience conducting incident investigations and implementing corrective/preventive actions
· Strong understanding of ergonomics, chemical safety, and biological hazard control.
· Proficiency in safety management systems (SMS) and incident tracking software.
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to train and influence employees at all levels.
· Strong organizational and documentation skills; ability to manage multiple priorities.
· Bilingual (English/Spanish) highly preferred due to workforce diversity.
· Ability to work in physically demanding environments (cold, wet, noisy) and respond to emergencies.
