Courtroom Clerk I

San Diego Superior Court is seeking qualified candidates for the Courtroom Clerk I eligible list. This opportunity is open to the general public and current employees of the San Diego Superior Court. Volunteers are not eligible to apply. The eligible list resulting from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Courtroom Clerk vacancies in all court locations as they occur and are approved to be filled. If you have already applied since the announcement first went out on January 5, 2023, you DO NOT need to reapply under this examination number to be considered. Courtroom Clerks may be assigned to any area or work location to meet the needs of the Court.

Courtroom Clerks perform complex legal clerical work in support of Superior Court judicial officers. Typical duties include attending court sessions to record and prepare the official minutes of court proceedings; administering oaths; impaneling juries and maintaining jury attendance records; receiving, marking and maintaining exhibits; reading verdicts and polling juries; calendaring activities in support of independent calendar departments in civil, family or probate, including preparing notices and resolving scheduling problems; providing authoritative information on court policies, procedures, or specific cases; utilizing and maintaining information in automated case management tracking systems; and filing, preparing and processing a variety of court documents for civil, criminal, juvenile, family law, probate, small claims, or minor offense cases.

The IDEAL CANDIDATE should have the following: Knowledge of legal terminology; legal clerical procedures related to preparing, processing and reviewing court-related documents and forms; routine court proceedings and calendaring activities related to civil, criminal, juvenile, family law, probate, small claims, and minor offense matters; and proper English usage, including grammar and punctuation. Ability to listen, summarize, and document court proceedings; read, comprehend and interpret legal codes and statutes; proofread and review documents and records for correctness and sufficiency of information; follow written and verbal instructions; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; prepare and compose correspondence and reports; train others in job tasks; maintain confidentiality; work independently; organize and prioritize work; effectively handle multiple and varied assignments simultaneously; exercise good judgment, tact, courtesy and diplomacy in dealing with judicial officers, court staff, attorneys, law enforcement officers and the general public; and operate and use personal computers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have at least two years of full-time experience as a Court Operations Clerk and related knowledge, skills and abilities; OR four years of full-time legal clerical/secretarial experience including preparing, processing and/or reviewing legal documents. Educational Substitution: A paralegal certificate from an accredited college or university or an Associate's degree (or higher) in business or a directly related field may substitute for up to a maximum of one (1) year of the required two (2) years of Court Operations Clerk legal clerical/secretarial experience.

Court area experience and work location preferences indicated on the application may be taken into consideration when referring candidates to the department hiring manager.
