This position operates a bulldozer and other various heavy equipment in a landfill environment.The New Hanover County Landfill provides safe, environmentally sound waste diversion, recycling, and disposal services to county residents and businesses. In operation since 1981, the landfill was the first lined landfill in the state of North Carolina. The site also boasts an innovative constructed wetlands system for the treatment of landfill leachate as well as a double reverse osmosis wastewater treatment plant. All landfill liner systems are designed to exceed federal and state requirements. The site also provides for the convenient recycling of tires, appliances ( white goods ), yard waste, mixed recyclables, construction, and demolition debris, batteries, used motor oil, cooking oil, antifreeze, oyster shells, sharps (needles), and other materials. Responsibilities for this role include:Cleans sites and remove debris Performs complex, regular preventative maintenanceTroubleshoots and performs minor repairs on tools and equipment requiring welding parts, fabrication and equipment mechanical knowledge and skills Provides continuous customer service Maintains a safe environment for coworkers and the general public at assigned site.Performs work with regular and predictable attendance consistently meeting the scheduling needs as required by the county.Performs work during emergency/disaster situations.Performs other duties of a similar nature or level. Grading experience is strongly preferred. Good organizational skills, ability to be a self-starter, and a positive attitude is a must. Additional requirements include experience in the operation landfill compactors, excavators, articulated dump trucks, front-end loaders, and motor graders. Licenses/Certifications Valid Driver's License and good driving record required at time of application. Valid North Carolina Driver's License required by first date of employment with good driving record.NC CDL license is strongly preferred Other Information PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crouching, handling, hearing, mental acuity, pulling, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.The work is typically performed in an environment where the employee may be exposed to varying temperature and/or weather conditions as well as varying degrees of distractions, conditions and/or chemicals and/or waste, and work with/operate potentially dangerous equipment which requires the employee to pay attention to one's own safety as well as that of customers and citizens served.
