Position Summary:
Responsible for administering, planning, and coordinating all work production in the Cytology and Molecular Department. Responsible for implementing company, laboratory, and department policies, procedures, manuals, continuing education programs, and safety initiatives to improve operating efficiency and effectiveness of the Cytology/Molecular Department. Develops and maintains all departmental standards to ensure compliance with all regulations.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Oversees day-to-day operations of the Cytology/Molecular Department, establishing guidelines to prioritize work production, evaluate effectiveness, and improve quality.
- Provides consultation to department staff to resolve technical problems and is available for support.
- Delegates authority, prioritizes work activities, resolves problems, prepares schedules, and sets deadlines for timely completion.
- Develops and implements laboratory and department policies, procedures, manuals, continuing education programs, and safety initiatives to ensure regulatory compliance and improve efficiency.
- Oversees the implementation of procedures for handling, processing, screening, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results.
- Adheres to all quality control/quality assurance policies and documents all activities.
- Develops and maintains policies for storage and maintenance of cytology/molecular equipment.
- Ensures all monthly statistics and records are current and compliant with regulations.
- Performs QA data collection, reviews, and works to improve departmental and company performance.
- Develops workflow management strategies to monitor workload volume.
- Ensures achievement of expected TAT metrics.
- Assesses departmental performance and sets workload standards bi-annually as per regulations.
- Prepares the department for regulatory inspections.
- Maintains laboratory equipment and approves ordering of supplies and services.
- Ensures compliance with all regulatory and licensure entities.
- Adheres to biosafety and security practices and regulations.
- May perform functions of a Cytology Technologist II as needed.
- Represents the laboratory and company at professional conferences.
- Develops staffing strategies, manages staffing costs, and evaluates staffing needs.
- Handles recruitment, hiring, training, disciplining, and evaluating Cytology personnel.
- Prepares and monitors the department budget.
- Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Complies with all relevant regulations and department policies.
- Addresses employee relations issues and ensures adherence to company policies.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- Master's degree from an accredited Cytotechnology program, or a B.S./B.A. with an accredited Cytotechnology/Diagnostic Cytology degree.
- At least 6 years of experience as a Cytotechnologist.
Licensure and Certifications:
- Board certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).
- Current CMS-approved proficiency test certificate if processing gynecological samples.
- State licensure if applicable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of CLIA regulations, laboratory policies, and standards.
- Knowledge of laboratory equipment, testing, and safety requirements.
- Proficiency in medical terminology, computer applications, and personnel management.
- Ability to analyze workload, schedule personnel, and resolve problems effectively.
- Strong communication skills and ability to establish positive relationships.
