On-Site Leader Training for Post-Disaster Safety EvaluationsMarch 21, 2025 | Franklin, Tennessee

CUSEC, in partnership with the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency and Tennessee SAVE Coalition , is hosting a training for engineers, architects, and others interested in supporting and managing deployments for post-disaster safety evaluation (e.g. ATC-20 and ATC-45). During the training, attendees will learn about:

• The National Incident Management System (NIMS).
• Typical post-disaster safety evaluation leadership and organizational structure, job titles and job descriptions.
• Deployment and management of post-disaster safety evaluation teams.
• Integration of data collection apps and geographic information systems (GIS).

The training will include a facilitated table top exercise, which will provide participants with insights to how to effectively manage volunteers who deploy to assess and evaluate buildings for safe occupancy after an earthquake or other disaster.

• Certificates of participation indicating six hours of professional development will be provided.

Engineers, architects, local building officials, local emergency managers, and others interested in leading and/or supporting safety evaluation deployments following a disaster.

Why attend

After a major disaster such as an earthquake, tornado, or flood, buildings and homes must be evaluated for safe occupancy and habitability. Protocols developed by the Applied Technology Council (ATC) for post-earthquake, wind, and flood (ATC-20 and ATC-45) are used during building evaluations, which are performed by architects, engineers, and other building design and code professionals. In many cases these professionals serve as volunteers, and those who are deployed to affected areas must be efficiently supported and managed. This training — developed and presented by the Missouri Structural Assessment and Visual Evaluation (SAVE) Coalition — will provide attendees with knowledge and resources to successfully manage on-site operations and teams for a post-disaster safety evaluation deployment. Additionally, the training satisfies one of the training requirements for the FEMA Post-Disaster Building Safety Evaluation Strike Team Leader resource type .
