Job Listing: Executive Director (The Art Center In Orange)

Salary Range: $50,000-60,000
Established in 1997, The Arts Center began by offering classes and having small gallery shows in leased spaces. In 2001, former business owner and town mayor Bob Morin donated his 11,000 square foot building on Main Street to The Arts Center. The first floor of the former retail store has been renovated and includes two gallery spaces, a classroom, a ceramics studio, and a gift shop. The second floor is available for further expansion and is currently used for storage.
The mission of The Arts Center in Orange is to increase the quality of life in our community by promoting an appreciation for fine contemporary arts in diverse styles and ideologies.
This is accomplished by providing:
- a forum to promote artistic excellence; scholarship and education
- a venue for Virginia artists and artisans to work, teach, exhibit, and sell work
- a place for the community to learn skills, and to participate in, as well as enjoy the arts
Key Responsibilities
- Planning and execution of development plan, including grant funding from the Virginia Commission for the Arts, private and public foundations, and individuals, and fundraising events and other special events.
- Preparation and management of the annual budget, working closely with the bookkeeper to manage accounts payable to vendors and artists and payroll. Prepare monthly financial reports for the Board. Compile financial documentation for an annual audit and IRS Form 990.
- Support the Board of Directors in strategic planning, development, and community outreach activities. Compile requested information and documents for Board meetings.
- Identify, negotiate, and install exhibits in the Morin and Community Gallery; including recruiting and cultivating guest curators.
- Supervise the expansion of the gift shop by recruiting appropriate artists and artisans to sell their work. Rebuild strong relationships with local artists who displayed their work prior to the pandemic.
- Supervise part-time staff and volunteers assisting with daily operations.
- Oversee all electronic media, including website management, social media, email marketing, and online fundraising.
Required Qualifications
- Five years of experience working in an arts organization or nonprofit, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, with at least one year in management; visual arts experience is a plus.
- Bachelor's Degree in art, art history, arts management, nonprofit management, or related field.
- Active fundraising experience, including grant writing and maintaining donor relations.
- Experience in community engagement and creative marketing strategies.
- Effective communication skills to engage stakeholders, members, donors, volunteers, and the community.
- Strong financial management skills, including budgeting, analysis, decision-making, and reporting. Proven success in generating revenue streams and achieving financial goals.
