Job Description :

The QUIKRETE Companies is seeking an exceptional candidate for a Color Formulator role at our new corporate Engineering & Technical Center located in Johns Creek, Georgia.

The Color Formulator will work with the product development and quality assurance teams to ensure new and existing products meet exacting color standards. This is a full-time, on-site role.

Successful candidates will contribute to the growth of The Quikrete Companies by developing, matching, and adjusting color formulations for a variety of coatings, grouts, and mortars. We are known for our leading position in bagged cement-based products, including pigmented tile grouts and masonry mortars. We also have a significant presence in the CASE space, selling pigmented waterproof membranes, moisture barriers, sealants, sealers, and coatings.

Key Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will use a strong understanding of color theory, pigment dispersion, and formulation techniques to ensure consistent and high-quality color performance. Duties include:

  • Develop and match custom color formulations using spectrophotometers, color software, and visual evaluation.
  • Adjust and refine existing formulations to meet customer specifications and production requirements.
  • Select appropriate pigments, resins, and additives based on performance, cost, and compatibility.
  • Conduct lab-scale batch mixing and testing to evaluate color accuracy, stability, and application properties.
  • Maintain accurate records of formulations, test results, and raw material usage.
  • Collaborate with production, quality control, and sales teams to ensure smooth scale-up and customer satisfaction.
  • Troubleshoot color-related issues in manufacturing or customer applications.
  • Stay current with industry trends, new pigment technologies, and regulatory requirements.

Expected Experience and Competencies:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field.
  • 2+ years of significant experience in color formulation; other formulation experience may qualify.
  • Must demonstrate superior color discrimination (a test will be required during the onsite interview).
  • Hands-on experience with color matching instruments (e.g., Hunterlab, Konica Minolta, etc.) and software.
  • Experience evaluating color perception via Ishihara and Munsell Hue test is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of color theory and pigment chemistry.
  • Excellent attention to detail and color perception.
  • Familiarity with sample preparation.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills.
  • Formulation experience with solid and liquid coatings, fillers, and adhesives.
  • Experience with color databases and digital color libraries.
  • Working understanding of statistics through academic coursework or Six Sigma-type on-the-job training.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills.
