Exciting times are ahead as we plan national and local celebrations for the American railroads' 200th anniversary in 2027. We're also undertaking a major campus renovation, developing an innovative workforce development program utilizing our 40-acre campus as a learning space, and expanding our educational initiatives, particularly for children with special needs.

The Development Manager for Grants and Stewardship plays a pivotal role in securing and managing funding from federal, state, local, and private sources to support the Museum's expanding portfolio of programs and initiatives. Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, this role is ideal for a detail-oriented, mission-driven professional who thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

This is an exciting time to join the Museum. With a world-class collection, an engaged board, and a dedicated team, we are in a period of dynamic growth. Current initiatives include the nationwide celebration of the 200th Anniversary of American Railroading in 2027, expansion of educational programs (including for children with special needs), and an innovative workforce development program on our 40-acre campus. We are proud to be a Smithsonian Affiliate and a designated site of the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.

Responsibilities

Working as part of a small but skilled team, the Development Manager for Grants and Stewardship will:

• Manage the full grants lifecycle: prospect research, proposal development, budgeting, submission, compliance, and reporting to meet annual funding goals.
• Maintain a comprehensive grants calendar to ensure timely submissions and reporting.
• Collaborate with program staff to draft compelling proposals and accurate budgets aligned with programmatic goals.
• Coordinate cross-departmental content and timelines to meet internal and external deadlines.
• Track and maintain records of grantmaker communications and submissions.
• Cultivate and steward relationships with funders, including timely acknowledgments and impact reporting.
• Create donor-centered communications that highlight the impact of grant funding.
• Generate financial and programmatic reports for internal and external stakeholders, including leadership and board members.
• Attend regular Museum staff meetings and actively contribute to the Museum's Programming Committee.
• Support other development initiatives and perform additional duties as needed.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree in communications, nonprofit management, public administration, or a related field preferred.
• 3–5 years of proven success in grant writing and management, with fundraising; experience with government grants strongly preferred.
• Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
• Strong project management and organizational skills with the capacity to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word and Excel; familiarity Adobe, PowerPoint, and Veevart (or similar CRM) is a plus.
• Basic knowledge of program evaluation and outcomes measurement is preferred.

Compensation

Pay:Compensation is commensurate with experience, but the expected salary for this position is$50,000-65,000 annually.
