Working/Functional Title

Student-Athlete Wellness Counselor

Position Summary

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES – RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide mental health consultation to athletes
  • Implement intake and screening procedures
  • Promote health, wellness, and safety for athletes
  • Perform duties characteristic of a counselor, social worker, or psychologist
  • Refer, consult, and collaborate with athletic trainers, team physicians, and psychiatrists
  • Develop mental health programs and services that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Complete university requirements, including POE, Title IX, and HIPAA
  • Ensure compliance with university, NCAA, federal, and state policies, procedures, and regulations
  • Maintain secure and electronic medical records while ensuring confidentiality
Communications – Interpersonal Relationships

Interacts with:

  • Student athletes
  • Athletic trainers
  • Team physicians
  • Psychiatrists and other healthcare providers
  • Coaches
Responsibility for the Work of Others

This position involves responsibility for the health and safety of others, including arranging timely and appropriate mental health services for student athletes.

Impact on Programs – Services – Operations

The services provided will influence athlete performance and team wellness, impacting overall program success.

Work Environment

Standard office environment with presentations in various settings. Hours may include evenings and weekends.

Minimum Requirements

The role requires knowledge equivalent to a degree in Counseling, Clinical or Sports Psychology, or Mental Performance Consulting, with 3-5 years of relevant experience with elite athletes. Experience in developing and delivering mental health programs. Licensure or certification as required.

  • Valid vehicle operator's license if needed
  • Other relevant skills and physical abilities
  • Knowledge of basic computer operations, email, and internet use prior to completing probation
