Job Description

Vertex is a global biotechnology company investing in scientific innovation to develop transformative medicines for serious diseases. Our approved medicines target underlying causes of chronic, life-shortening genetic diseases such as cystic fibrosis, pain, sickle cell disease, and transfusion-dependent beta thalassemia. We also pursue a robust pipeline of investigational therapies across various modalities.

The Senior Director of Protein Sciences and Structural Biology will expand our research in structural biology and biophysics. This on-site role at our San Diego research facility requires expertise in these fields to guide drug discovery programs and provide molecular insights for developing novel therapeutics. The individual will lead a team of structural biologists to determine high-resolution structures of key targets, protein-ligand and protein-protein interactions, and mechanisms of action. They will apply their scientific acumen to identify project needs and strategically advance efforts.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead and mentor a team specializing in structural biology and biophysics, fostering collaboration.
  • Develop strategies leveraging structural biology for target validation, mechanism studies, and drug discovery.
  • Champion and apply new structural biology and biophysical technologies to advance projects, including MoA and binding site identification.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive drug discovery from target selection to clinical candidate delivery.
  • Perform hands-on experimental troubleshooting and methods development in biophysical assays and structure determination.
  • Stay current with advancements, integrating new methodologies into the research process.
  • Propose and develop data analysis tools, maintaining high standards for data integrity and documentation.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance, accurate record-keeping, and promote scientific rigor and integrity.
  • Required Education and Experience

    • Ph.D. in Structural Biology, Biophysics, or related field with 11+ years of industry or academic experience, including 5+ years managing a team.
    • Alternatively, a Master's degree with 15+ years or a Bachelor's degree with 20+ years of relevant experience.
    • Extensive experience in biotech, pharma, or academic research, with a proven leadership record in structural biology and biophysics.

    Knowledge and Skills

    • Strong reputation and impact in driving drug discovery through structural biology and biophysics, including MoA and target characterization.
    • Experience with membrane proteins is highly desirable.
    • Proven leadership, team management, and fostering innovation and inclusion.
    • Creative scientific thinking, leadership, and motivational skills.
    • Excellent communication skills for articulating goals and results.
    • Experience collaborating with stakeholders and influencing research directions.
    • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.
