Position Summary

The Safety Director will manage the development, maintenance, and application of safety and emergency-related policies and procedures and will maintain compliance with The Joint Commission and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) regulations.

The Safety Director will ensure the provision of programs that ensure a safe workplace including safety orientations, skill training, emergency preparedness, workplace violence, proper job instruction, hazardous material disposal procedures, and the use of protective equipment, conduct safety inspections and audits, and promote safety awareness and ongoing safety education to all employees. The Safety Director will create and present reports on safety performance and incidents and implement or adjust safety practices as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience working in Health and Safety, Environmental Health, or related field.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Safety Management or any other related field of study is preferred.
  • A Master's degree would be a plus.
  • Health and safety certification preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of the Joint Commission Environment of Care Standards.
  • Strong familiarity with OSHA standards.
  • Must be an effective communicator on all fronts; clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent leadership and management qualities and experience managing multiple programs and teams.
  • Excellent organizational and motivational skills.
  • Experience with the development and administration of policies and procedures.
  • Experience conducting risk assessments and reporting results.
  • Ability to facilitate multidisciplinary meetings and presentations.
  • Knowledge of emergency preparedness and management standards.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills to identify safety issues and develop and implement sound solutions.
  • Excellent decision-making skills to make decisions in the best interest of the organization, employees, and projects quickly and confidently consistent with the organization's goals.
  • Must be a good team player and have excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Computer (PC) literate in Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook email, and database software.

  • Commitment to abide by standards of professional ethics and maintain confidentiality.
  • Adherence to infection control procedures, including but not limited to, standard precautions of temperature monitoring, hand washing, symptom self-monitoring, masking and social distancing.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and an insurable driving record.
  • Ability to travel to different sites up to 40% of the time.
  • Assist and support the Center/Department/Program to meet standards of High Reliability.
  • Directs and supervises the general safety and emergency guidelines and procedures of the organization.
  • Provides guidance on health and safety to ensure the organization meets industry, local, state, and federal guidelines and regulations.
  • Creates an environment of education, mentorship, and empowerment to promote employee engagement in a culture of safety.
  • Plans, implements and conducts preventative care, safety, and regulatory compliance training programs.
  • Conducts safety meetings, audits, and inspections in conjunction with departmental leadership and Safety Ambassadors to ensure compliance, evaluate performance, identify corrective action, and implement follow-up assessments.
  • Ensures The Joint Commission (TJC) proper documentation for the EOC (Environment of Care), LS (Life Safety), and EM (Emergency Management) chapters.
  • Oversee the ongoing implementation and maintenance of the Injury and Illness Prevention Plan and Workplace Violence Plan.
  • Conduct an annual hazard vulnerability assessment (HVA)/ risk analysis to find the organization's risk for natural (e.g., hurricanes, floods, earthquakes), technological (e.g., nuclear power plant emergencies or hazardous materials spills), human-caused (e.g., active shooter or hostage situations), and other disasters.
  • Updates emergency plans and procedures for disasters/risks identified in the HVA.
  • Works with the interdisciplinary team in the creation, development, education, training, and implementation of disaster plans that are in alignment with state and other regulatory agencies.
  • Implement initiatives to reduce the level of work-related accidents and/or occupational hazards.
  • Investigate accidents to find out their causes; and implement prevention measures.
  • Ensures completion of safety event report investigations and documentation.
  • Sees that all work is performed according to approved manuals, internal policies, and procedures.
  • Maintain all recordkeeping requirements including training and compliance records and examine trends to reduce future incidents.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The work environment is characteristic of a medical clinic environment. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to handle, or reach. The employee is also required to stand; walk; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must also possess hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the phone. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.

The employee may be in contact with individuals and families in crisis who may be ill, using substances and/or not attentive to personal health and safety for themselves or their homes. The employee may experience a number of unpleasant sensory demands associated with the client's use of alcohol and drugs, and the lack of personal care. The employee may also be exposed to bodily fluids (blood, urine) and hazardous chemicals.
