Job Summary ***Please note: This is a volunteer position with no compensation***The El Paso County Sheriff's Office (EPSO) Volunteer Program is composed of a collective citizens group with a true and common desire to partner with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office by volunteering their services while learning more about the internal workings of the law enforcement community. The use of citizen volunteers assists the Sheriff's Office in meeting these demands and, as the demand continues to grow, so will the need for active citizen participation. As an on-call Wildland Firefighter, respond to and suppress fires in El Paso County and surrounding areas, assist with mitigation and public education. Essential Duties/Responsibilities Volunteers will be utilized in non-law enforcement support duties. Common duties performed by the volunteers may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • To respond to and suppress fires in El Paso County and surrounding counties.
  • Participate in ignition and control of prescribed fires.
  • Attend Wildland Fire Crew training sessions and meetings.
  • Mitigation projects, community outreach and education efforts, out of county/out of state deployments.
  • Other duties based on operational needs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Required Education and Experience
  • Must be a law-abiding citizen with good intent.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be willing to commit at least 80 volunteer hours annually.
Licenses/Certificates
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must obtain and maintain Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) Compliance within six months of employment.
  • Certificate of course completion for ICS-700 and ICS-100 preferred.
  • Current National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) certification including S-130, S-190, S-131, S-212, S-260, and S-290 trainings preferred.
  • Advanced First Aid and CPR certifications preferred.
    • To deploy, must be able to pass rigorous physical agility test and maintain the NWCG Red Card qualification (Incident Qualifications Card). Program priority is given to deployable volunteer firefighters.
Pre-Employment Requirements
  • Must pass background investigation, motor vehicle record check, drug screen, physical examination, and truth verification examination.
Work Conditions Duties require extreme physical exertion, working outdoors in all terrain and weather conditions, working long hours, and for extended periods of time. Potential for working in stressful and dangerous situations, including steep terrain, inclement weather, hazardous traffic, exposure to smoke, flame, hazardous materials, and biohazards. Ability to work long hours with the possibility of being absent from home for consecutive days or more. Must be able to carry up to 45 lbs, run, bend, twist, walk and/or climb. Must be able to safely lift and transport 45 lbs over flat terrain for 3 miles in less than 45 minutes. All fire personnel are required to wear safety clothing and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during regular work hours and while firefighting.*Each volunteer role has unique qualifications and requirements.
