Position Summary

The Test Assistant provides testing services to support the operation and maintenance of substation and electrical equipment under the guidance of a Test Supervisor, Project Test Specialist, Test Specialist, or Test Engineer. This role is part of a four-step progression designed to provide experience and training for advancement to the Test Specialist classification.

Position Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology, or an associate's degree in electrical engineering or technology, or equivalent education in math and science.
  • Valid motor vehicle license.
  • Ability to stand on call assignments.
  • Desirable skills include knowledge of transmission protection devices, relay and control operational and safety procedures, testing system design, organizational skills, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Key Responsibilities
  • Perform power factor and breaker timing tests.
  • Analyze, interpret, and present test results.
  • Conduct basic relay testing.
  • Perform technical calculations for testing.
  • Perform cable proof, locating, and fault tests.
  • Assist with installation and testing of mobile transformers.
  • Locate sources of radio and TV interference.
  • Test underground network protectors.
  • Support troubleshooting and repair of electrical devices.
  • Adjust and repair substation meters.
  • Assist with substation modifications and power quality investigations.
  • Compensation

    The salary starts at $41.17 per hour, with progression per union contract. Benefits overview available on our career site.

    Position Description

    This is a four-step progression role, providing training for potential advancement to a Test Specialist. The level assigned depends on education and experience. Entry level (Step 1) requires no prior experience, with supervision to support testing and maintenance of substation equipment. More advanced steps involve increased responsibilities, including construction testing, maintenance, and technical assistance.

    Qualifications for Test Specialist and Project Test Specialist

    Minimum of 2 years related experience with a Bachelor's degree or 4 years with an Associate's degree. Must have knowledge of substation equipment, safe testing procedures, and strong computer skills for automated testing.

    Internal and external postings. Candidates must pass the TECHtest. Bargaining unit employees with contractual rights will be prioritized.
