GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE JOB:The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) is seeking a Teaching Assistant (TA) or Graduate Teaching Assistant (GRA). The candidate must be a continuing student in either Biomedical/Civil/Electrical/Computer Engineering and/or Computer Science/Information Technology/Cyber Security, with a GPA higher than 3.0. The student must have an Engineering/Computer Science or equivalent background to assist SEAS Faculty members with lab courses, tutoring, and engineering/computer science departments. Proficiency includes strong written and verbal communication skills, MS Office (Word/Excel/PowerPoint), basic computer programming skills, and the ability to learn new software tools and research techniques.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching the assigned curriculum in one- to three-hour classroom sessions.Collecting data for various research projects.Leading class discussions and answering student questions.Setting up labs and other class materials (projector, forms, handouts, etc.).Evaluating student essays, projects, labs, tests, and other assessments.Maintaining records on student progress/grades.Escorting and supervising students on any class outings/trips.Tutoring individual students and groups with learning challenges.MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree.Two (2) years' experience in preparing reports, data management, and documentation is required.Two (2) years' experience in office management is preferred.Evidence of coursework in research methods is required.Demonstration of ability to interact effectively with university stakeholders is expected.REQUIRED COMPETENCIES:
Excellent management, interpersonal, verbal and written communication, and problem-solving skills.Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.Ability to work with collaborative online media such as GoToMeeting, Zoom, MSTeams (Blackboard) or Outlook.Ability to prepare and conduct surveys.STANDARDS & EXPECTATIONS:
Incumbent is expected to execute assignments successfully and to perform the majority of assigned duties with a high degree of independence, exercising sound judgment, initiative, and efficiency.The employee is expected to participate in activities that will help in the development of his/her career and help in the performance of the job. Employees may seek counseling from the immediate supervisor.Training is available to help improve the skill and knowledge level, and for updates on the latest techniques, methods, and theories that are being used in the industry.The position requires a solid understanding of the policies and procedures of the Board of Trustees, the University, as well as applicable Federal and D.C. government laws.Normal physical dexterity is required, including sitting, walking, standing, and bending. The work is sedentary and mostly performed in an office setting, frequently having a great deal of activity and traffic.
