About the Role
The Mechanical Systems Group, part of the Department of Space Instruments and Payloads, is responsible for developing spaceflight instrumentation, structures, and avionics. We are seeking a Lead or Principal Engineer to support the full lifecycle of hardware development for spaceflight applications.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead multidisciplinary project teams in designing, analyzing, and building space instrumentation, mechanisms, and spacecraft hardware.
- Interface with customers and support design reviews to justify design decisions.
- Support R&D efforts to develop new technologies and promote innovation.
- Perform structural and thermal analyses using finite element software.
- Oversee supervision and fabrication of spaceflight hardware.
- Test hardware to ensure robustness against launch and space environmental conditions.
- Mentor junior engineers and develop best practices for hardware development.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
- 8-18 years of experience in CAD design and FEA analysis.
- Knowledge of metallic and composite manufacturing processes.
- Experience with spaceflight mechanisms and deployable systems is desirable.
- Valid driver's license; ability to work shifts.
Additional Requirements
Applicants must be U.S. citizens and pass a government security investigation to access classified information.
