Living Classrooms Foundation leads a major community service and job-training initiative, Project SERVE, which provides on-the-job training for 150 unemployed and disadvantaged young adults per year in marketable skills while revitalizing Baltimore neighborhoods. The program has expanded to include a re-entry initiative for ex-offenders, starting during incarceration with wrap-around services, and continuing as full-time employment upon release. The goals of SERVE include reducing crime rates, impacting communities positively, providing workforce development, increasing educational opportunities, and improving neighborhood safety and housing.

Job Summary

The Neighborhood Stabilization (NS) Crew Assistant assists the Crew Chief in cleaning, maintaining, and disposing of debris at assigned properties. They demonstrate proper use of work equipment and assist in instructing others on tool use. They also serve as a professional representative, communicating effectively with the public and ensuring safety and proper tool and vehicle use.

Essential Functions

  • Inspect and ensure vehicle readiness each morning, reporting issues to the Crew Supervisor.
  • Drive vehicles to and from designated properties.
  • Assist the Crew Chief in clearing properties.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, pull, push, and lift equipment and tools.
  • Inventory and safely store equipment at shift end.
  • Report accidents and incidents promptly.
  • Ensure team members wear uniforms and safety gear.
  • Address questions or concerns from neighbors and community members, directing complex issues to the Crew Chief or Supervisor.
  • Arrive on time and prepared for work daily.

Job Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED preferred.
  • Valid Driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Strong verbal and communication skills.
  • Commitment to professional and equitable practices.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Work Environment

  • Outdoor work in grass, vacant yards, alleys, and lots.
  • Weather conditions vary; work is physically demanding with frequent bending, lifting, and shoveling.
