Position Overview

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Penn State seeks an Assistant Research Professor to join a multidisciplinary team studying Arctic environmental change. The role involves developing and applying advanced models to understand Arctic warming impacts on thermal, hydrologic, and geomorphological processes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop multiscale models of thermal and hydrologic dynamics in Arctic systems, including water flow and permafrost thaw.
  • Enhance hydro-thermal process representation in the DOEs E3SM Land Model (ELM).
  • Assess large-scale water storage trends in Arctic watersheds.
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at conferences.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Earth sciences, hydrology, environmental engineering, climate science, or related field by start date.
  • Experience with process-based hydrologic and thermal modeling.
  • Familiarity with land surface or Earth system models.
  • Knowledge of Arctic ecosystems, permafrost dynamics, and remote sensing is a plus.
  • Proficiency in scientific programming (Python, Fortran, C++) and high-performance computing.
  • Record of peer-reviewed publications and collaborative research skills.
